The crane operator should always pay attention to state of the crane and its equipment. It is the crane operator’s respo
nsibility to carry out sufficient checks and inspections to make sure the crane is in proper co
ndition before, during and after crane operations.
The crane operator should always check the lifting operation with respect to crane capacity and range of uses before the lifting operation is started. All loose gear or equipment used for lifting the load is to be checked and considered fit by crane operator before taken into use.
If safety in any way might be questioned, the crane operator should have authority to stop the crane or refuse to use it until load handling can be carried out in a safe and reliable way. The crane is not to be used if any of the crane limitation or safety equipment is defective. The crane operator shall be familiar with the crane Operating- Safety- and Emergency Instructions and Procedures. All emergency procedures are to be checked out and tested in practice, frequently enough to ensure a quick and reliable performance when needed.
Distribution of responsibility regarding the lifting operation should always be made absolute clear before the operation is started. The crane operator should only comply with the signals given by the designated signalman, if any. Crane operator shall not be preoccupied with anything that might disturb him while he is operating the crane and he should at any time respond to a request for emergency stop, no matter from what source the request might come.
